Typical
Day at the Center
In the Infants' Rooms
All's quiet in the Infants'
rooms. Well, mostly quiet. The
babies gurgle, coo, learn to
laugh, explore the sounds they
can make, and occasionally cry,
but never for long. They also
listen to the gentle voices of
their caregivers, as they talk
and sing to them. The babies
sleep, eat, wiggle, look, and
are cuddled and rocked, all on
their own individual schedules.
They're fed when they are hungry
and they sleep when they're
tired. Their individual routines
change as they grow. Frequent
communication between parents
and Corning Children's Center
staff help to ensure that the
transitions between home and the
Center are smooth and help the
babies to feel secure,
comfortable, and happy.
Elsewhere in the Center
It's not so quiet! The sound of
children's voices and laughter
mix with those of their
teachers. Sometimes singing or
the sound of rhythm instruments
adds to the mix, or recorded
music, as they listen and move
to its rhythms. Sometimes the
words they say or sing are
Spanish -- a regular part of our
rich curriculum that helps to
develop language areas of the
brain as well as broadening
their understanding of a world
with many cultures.
They're also: painting
pictures…rolling clay into
shapes…fitting puzzle pieces
together…listening to -- and
telling! -- stories… peering
through microscopes…hunting for
caterpillars…watching
birds…climbing on playground
equipment…running, skipping,
leaping, dancing…making sounds
like a dog, a pig, a
donkey…making a poem
together…listening quietly to
visitors…and lots more.
Children from toddlers
through pre-Kindergarteners
explore, learn, nap, play, and
soak up warm care throughout the
day. Whenever possible, they
spend some time outdoors with
their teachers and caregivers,
exploring the natural world,
going on field trips, and
breathing fresh air. Children
develop cognitive, motor and
social skills appropriate to
their stage of development
through a wide range of
stimulating age-appropriate
activities in language,
movement, art, music, science,
and more. The daily routines and
activities in each class are
built around their developmental
stage and the particular
abilities, interests and skills
of the individual children in
the group.
